Ruth Cervantes’s Journey

The journey I set out to travel has no end or finish line. I have erased who I used to be and made myself who I am today. It hasn’t been easy, as a matter fact it’s been one of the toughest things I’ve done. Sweat, tears, and happiness all in one word “CHANGE.”

It all began in the fall of 2010; I was at my lowest points of my life physically. Drained and overwhelmed from working a full time job, being a full time mom, wife, and student. I was finishing up my pre-requisites to get into nursing school. It was my last two science classes’, they took a toll on me. I’ve always been the type of person that eats when stressed and this was no different, I was at my heaviest weight close to 200 pounds. I felt depressed, fat, and ugly. November came and it was my birthday, I did not feel good at all. I felt like a cow. I knew I had to make a change, finally the semester ended and I completed my classes with a 4.0. It was time to stop feeling sorry for myself and do something about it.

January 17th was my day! That’s when I began to change myself. I attended boot camp 2-3 times a week up until June and learned about clean eating, I ended up changing my whole lifestyle. Prepared all my meals and stayed focused. I signed up to run a half marathon, I had never even ran 1/4 mile, but I was determined to finish the race. I began to train for my half marathon during my sons football practice, I ran with my good friend who had always been a runner. Beatriz and I trained 4 months for our half and we finished it. We completed the half marathon in 2 hours 15 min. Not once did we walk, we were proud and I was hooked. I have not stopped running since and I have done 2 other half marathons and will run a full marathon in 2013.

In September my friend introduced me to a couple of online trainers who were doing a weight loss challenge so we decided to sign up and “Train Loca”. I won that challenge, I joined the gym and followed the nutrition and workout plan Chris Martinez tailored for me. It gave me confidence to step into the weight room and lift weights. I gained lean mass while losing fat. Lifting weights has transformed my body. Dynamic Duo Training is not like any other trainers, what I love about them is that they are real, no BS, and very humble. They have supported me so much. I’ll never forget when Chris told me that he believed in me and would always push me to do better.

It has been almost 2 years since I began my journey and I will not go back. I’ve met some great people who I truly love; Trainers, workout partners, and running friends. These great and positive people support me and motivate me each and every day. It’s such a great accomplishment to be able to motivate others. Changing my lifestyle has completely changed my life, my son and I have a new tradition and I look forward to us running the turkey trot every year. I have introduced new runners to the running world.

I don’t have a goal date, I do have a vision of what I want my body to look like and I know it will take time and sweat and most of all dedication. I won’t stop and can’t stop!
